As an immigrant with relatives scattered around the world, I’ve long been fascinated with how we make homes for ourselves and stay connected as a family despite the distances between us. Sometimes there are ruptures in that link which raises more questions than can be answered.

One of my most striking memories as a child was watching my great-aunt from South Korea, in a full face of makeup and a white Chanel outfit, walk up to her son’s headstone in a cemetery crumple to the grass in tears. His death had been an accident and she was full of unfathomable grief. My parents refused to talk about it, leaving me curious. I never saw her again. Why hadn’t she come to the funeral? Why wouldn’t anyone talk about her or her son? Years later, speculations on this mystery would build to the question at the heart of The Apology. What pulls families apart and what can mend those rifts?

About the Author

Jimin Han was born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up in Providence, Rhode Island; Dayton, Ohio; and Jamestown, New York. Her work has been supported by the New York State Council on the Arts. She is the author of A Small Revolution and has written for American Public Media's Weekend America, Poets & Writers, and Catapult, and other media outlets. She teaches at The Writing Institute at Sarah Lawrence College, Pace University, and community writing centers. She lives outside New York City with her husband and children.
